Welcome to ScubaFlag.com.
The types of flags commonly seen when diving or near divers.
The diver down flag tells others a scuba diver is in the water.
The “Alpha” or “Alfa” flag. Designates a small vessel engaged in diving operations with restricted maneuverability.
Huh, I had no idea about the flags…getting scuba certified is on my todo list. Know of any good schools where I can get certified?
The blog roll has a link to the YMCA’s site about their scuba certification program.
There are quite few places that I have traveled that offered scuba lessons that allowed myself to become level one certified and go diving on the same day. Expect to pay about $100 which includes beginner certification, a guide and teacher, your scuba tank - yes the biggest cost is your air and yes its importand!
Some places I have dived with no problems.
St. Lucia - Southern Caribbean, The dive master gave us basic certification in the pool for about an hour and for about $100 we took a nice boat ride up the coast from our resort and got to do a shallow dive, had lunch and returned.
Cozumel, Mexico - Has a beautiful state park with some of the best scuba diving in the world. Cozumel is an island about 8-12 miles off the coast of Cancun, Yucatan Penisula in the Gulf of Mexico,. Again I was certified in about an hour in the resorts pool for free! The trip I took was less than $100. Snorkeling was great too.
Puerto Vallartta, Mexico - Located on the Pacific side of Mexico. We stayed about a 20 minute drive out of the city. The place was beautiful from what I can remember. It was a crazy trip with about 10 other friends. The cost of a dive trip was still under $100.
Kaye Caulker, Belize - A small country just on the border of southern Mexico. We stayed last fall on the island of Kaye Caulker that was about a 45 minute boat ride from the city of Belize. Our guide that we found was located right on the beach. Harry took us and 1 other person on an all day snorkeling trip one day for $45 per person, was incredible, we saw mantarays, large turtles and we even caught one for a short time. Belize is famous for scuba diving with a large coral reef. Of course the next day we booked the same guide to take us scuba diving, we got to do a shallow dive and then did a night dive, the scuba trip was about $90 and included 2 tanks!!! a great deal.
Aruba, Souther Caribbean Island - About 15 miles of the coast of Venezuela. Same certification as the rest from a dive shop located right on the beach at our resort. Not much to see in Aruba. They have an old suken oil tanker and some wrecks, rough water. But it was ok. The tourist board promotes the island hard but I don’t see the attraction with so many other beautiful islands to visit.
Anguilla, northern Caribbean just off the coast of St Martin, which has the airport and a ferry was about $15 US to the island. Beautiful and extremely expensive. I guess it was worth it, the island had probably the most gorgeous beaches I have ever seen. My wifes favorite place. The scuba diving was good and about $150 US for a quick trip with a dive master.
I have been to a few others also and have never been certified in the USA, I just get a quick certification at where ever my travels bring me. I guess I could have moved my certification up by now for deeper dives, but I have fun anyway.
